Falls short of expectations

Mithran R Jawahar made heads turn with his splendid visualisation of the songs in “Yaaradi Nee Mohini” (‘Yengenyoo Partha Mayakam' and ‘Venmegam'). He is back with his second directorial venture — “Kutty”, a remake of the Telugu movie “Arya”.

Usual elements

When a movie is an adaptation of a commercially successful original, expectations are high. Unfortunately this Dhanush-Shreya starrer disappoints from the word go. The usual ingredients of a pot boiler form the elements of this flick as well.

The film is a triangular love story and has Arjun (Sameer Dattani) playing Geetha's (Shreya) love interest. The other vertex is obviously our hero Kutty (Dhanush) and he looks smart with his beard and short haircut. The plot starts to move with average speed only much after the interval.

Arjun is a character who has a clichéd being — he is a politician's son. He has a set of friends (actually henchmen). The character sketch of Kutty is very ordinary. Thankfully this does not hinder the capabilities of the talented actor and he does his job well.

Shreya looks beautiful. To our surprise she is seen in modest dresses throughout the movie. The movie has little scope for her acting talent except for the climax. She could have done much better there.

The songs by Devi Sri Prasad are not worth mentioning. Thank god at least there is nothing to complain about the background score. Some of the frames in the movie are worth a mention due to their glossy nature. The camera work is above average.

The other loop hole in the story is that suddenly from no where a priest appears. His philosophical advice to Geetha is torture to say the least.

Bottomline: Bad script selection. Dhanush, please take care…
