Meet Young Designer siblings: Julia and Sita.

Meet Young Designer siblings: Julia and Sita.

The first thing that you will notice when you meet sisters-cum-designers Julia and Sita is how comfortable they are with their clothes. Not only with what they wear but what they create too.

Raised outside the country was hardly a hindrance when they decided to set shop in the city. From making friends to marketing their new line of clothes, they have come a long way.

Their launch at Evolv saw many youngsters take a keen liking to their designs and it is with this confidence the duo will take their designs to the Capital City later this month.

Two siblings with disparate names. Tell us your story and how you took to retailing?

Coming from a multi-cultural family, with an Austrian mother and a Punjabi father, we have a rather mixed background. Our parents were in the garment business and moved to India two decades ago. As children, we grew up surrounded by fabrics and embroidery and developed a fascination for them. Our brother also always encouraged us to do something creative and that’s why we are here today.

From designing a dress for a friend to showcasing at Evolv... Tell us more.

We love dressing up people and our friends were our usual muses who have always trusted us to create a stylish outfit for them for special occasions. As people noticed our bold designs and through word-of-mouth, there was a demand for more. It takes a critical eye to measure the standard of uniqueness and potential of any form of art. Evolv has displayed this level of careful selection throughout their stores and we are proud that they have chosen us to showcase our first collection with them.

How challenging is it debuting a collection?

It’s nerve wracking! You can be sure of your own taste, but unsure of how others might perceive it. However, the biggest pro is how well it was received! Knowing that somebody appreciates your style and that it makes them feel good about themselves is the most satisfying part of what we do.

As 20-somethings, which aspects worked in your favour and which did not?

Being young is an advantage. Not only do you have more energy but you take more risks and that gives you an edge. There is no disadvantage to being young!

Midnight Collection, your 30-piece-line, is packed with glamour and ambition. Tell us about it.

The Midnight Collection is a unique and limited collection. We used beautiful flowing Indian silks and Italian silk blends that are hand-dyed with charcoal greys and jewel tones. We have also incorporated hand embroidery into this collection which adds to the glamorous effect we were trying to achieve. Each piece is handmade and aimed at women with a fast-paced and fun lifestyle.

What makes you both click as a team?

Our mixed educational background and our being sisters is what binds us into a great team. Julia has formal training in art and fashion design, while Sita has studied business management.

As fashion designers what are your style statements

As fashion designers, style is not just about keeping up with the latest trends, but discovering your individual style that is comfortable and which suits you best.
