A very dull day in college and equally dull TV programmes made my mom and me decide to go for a walk. We decided to go via the Korattur road to Ambattur to visit my dad in his office. It was just 6:30 in the evening and the roads were pitch-dark.
Ambattur’s popularity as an industrial area should have at least guaranteed it some roads with lights. But the roads remained dark and the feeble light emitted by those incandescent light bulbs (zero watt bulbs which contrary to their name aren’t 0 watts) at infrequent intervals was a sorry excuse for illumination. Not only that, but the entire stretch of Jawaharlal Nehru road at Vadapalani is also in the same condition and especially with the metro rail work going on, the road literally takes the look of a graveyard. At least, the recent incidents that took place at Namakkal, Puducherry, Tuticorin and Nagapattinam should have made the city officials realise the importance of good lighting. We see malls and multiplexes cropping up in different parts of the city, but no one takes any initiative to solve this basic problem.
