The Electronic Media Department of MOP Vaishnav College for Women officially launched the “Montage Club” recently.
Conecting with the industry
“The club will organise workshops, seminars and competitions in which the students will directly interact with people from the industry” said M. Ranjani, the President of the club, “It is also a chance for us to make our presence felt in the industry itself.”
“We were the first college to offer the electronic media degree,” said Mr. Haridas, Secretary of the college, while addressing the students, “And this club takes our commitment to another level entirely. It is all about picking the best ideas and stringing them to create meaning and art” he added.
The Chief Guest for the day, actor Sripriya was candid with the students during her interaction. The actor advised the students to regularly update their skills in order to survive in the media industry. “This industry is extremely competitive and a career here has a short life span, therefore one must have the heart of a rock to survive and fight,” she said. She also stressed on the importance of constantly reinventing oneself in order to stay fresh. “I have been an actor, writer and director. I have learnt from personal experience that being narrow minded would not help in this cut throat industry.”
“This club is really the brainchild of Dr. Kavitha who is the Dean of the Media department”, said Ms. N. Meenakshi, the Head of the Department, “Ultimately it is about a collection of different students coming together to create a better media society something like a film montage where various images come together to make meaning.” She also said that it was also an initiative to acclimatise the students to the various aspects of film-making such as production, set design and lighting.
Activities
To mark the occasion, the department had organised a workshop with noted cinematographer, Nirav Shah a day earlier. “We are also having many activities and competitions for the students over the next few days,” said Ms. Meenakshi. The club has also planned an array of events over the academic year which includes a film festival and a photography exhibition along with field trips and seminars with professionals from the industry.
