FIFA 2014 may be over. And while football-inspired fashion saw its share of nail art of flags, country colours and symbols, nail art has and will continue to be a rage. And we’re not just talking about funky colours or blingy polishes.

Makeup artist and blogger, Naina Ruhail, says: “Ombré nails and angled French tips are my personal favourite. They’re really classy and simple.”

Move over hearts, there are so many more nail art options available now. Horizontal blue stripes on a white base make for the perfect nautical look. You could wear an anchor shaped midi ring to complete the look. Chevron nail art in contrasting colours is also an excellent option for the monsoons. The mosaic pattern in different shades is intriguing. If the child in you is still alive, you can even opt for a Disney theme. Minnie Mouse’s bow and ears are trending big time. Florals, polka dots and stars are rather common and easy to achieve.

If you’re the kind that opts for the offbeat, according to makeup artist and nail technician, Aleena Mackar, “The funkiest manicures right now would be the geometric print, Aztec print, bling and reverse French manicures. Another trend that is catching on is painting only the nails of the ring fingers in a blingy shade.”

Political nail art may not have come to India yet but Katy Perry went the stars and stripes way with her red, blue and white nail art. She even had President Obama’s face painted on one of her nails! Music inspired themes are slowly becoming popular. Band logos and silhouettes on guitars characterise this form of nail art.

“I really love the moustache motif and they’re on my nails now,” says collegian Maleeha S, flaunting her nails. “About two months ago when I was holidaying in Australia, since I’ve got a sweet tooth, macaroons, cupcakes and ice creams made it to my nails. It was time consuming but luckily nail bars and salons have begun to offer customised services like this.”

With DIY nail art trending, Naina suggests: “Apply French nail strips followed by the application of colourful polish to the tips. Remove the strips and apply a nude top coat to achieve nude nails with vibrant tips.”

Another DIY option is the leopard print nail art. “It’s the simplest. The trick is to just draw incomplete and uneven circles,”

Aleena says, adding: “Neutrals are always a favourite. Metallic/chrome polishes too seem to be the doing the rounds and neons are now a dying trend. Colour wise, Naina feels “pastels are ruling this season.”
