Maruti has no new model launches in the near future, which is why it is doing the next best thing. The company is adding variants to its existing range to ensure there is a buzz around the brand. So After a slew of CNG variant launches last month, Maruti has fitted the A-star with an automatic gearbox.

The car will be available only in VXi trim — and at Rs. 4.35 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), it's the most expensive A-star variant you can buy.

It also gets power windows all round, power steering, central locking, height-adjustable driver's seat, internally adjustable rear view mirrors and ABS as standard.

The four-speed gearbox mates well with the KB10 engine. It's acceptably swift in operation and power delivery is reasonably smooth as well.

Performance, however, is slightly hampered by the auto which seems to be sapping the engine of power when driven in the regular D mode.

City driving

Driving at slow city speeds is not much of a hassle but when you want an extra surge of power for a quick overtaking move, the gearbox is found wanting. More enthusiastic drivers will enjoy slotting the gearbox into the D-2 mode where engine and gearbox responses are crisper.

Maruti hasn't fitted the A-star with a dead pedal which is sorely missed since a dead pedal is a necessity to rest your foot in the absence of the clutch.

The power-assisted steering is quite light to operate, which is great for parking in tight spots. Though it's not overtly feel-some, it makes up for this with consistency.

Compact cabin

The relatively small wheelbase means that the impact of some potholes do crash through into the cabin. And it is business as usual inside the cabin — A-star regular upholstery and grey plastics.

As a relatively cheap and cheerful small car, there's plenty the A-star automatic has going for it.

It is an ideal car for a couple or a single owner because it gives hassle free city driving pleasure at a low cost.
