Rains in Bengaluru create quite a havoc. It affects not just our traffic but also our mindsets, making one dread to get out of our cosy homes. But, fashion, somehow, seems to be on the bright side even when the monsoon hits. That’s right, according to the fashion fraternity, you don’t need to prioritise style and comfort over functionality and fashion, as the two can co-exist quite seamlessly.

So if you are one who is in a predicament of what to wear during the rains, here are a few pointers just for you.

Priya Vasudevan, proprietor of Collage Shop India, says: “This Monsoon is about jump suits, dhoti skirts, capes, and short boxy dresses.” Meanwhile fashion designer and proprietor of Brass Tacks, Anaka Narayanan, casts her vote in favour of culottes, wide-leg pants, flowing cardigans, and cold-shoulder tops or dresses that are in trend at the moment.

“This is the best time to wear monotone dresses. They work for the day and night. Throw on a light-weight cardigan in a contrasting shade when you head to work and for an evening do, replace it with a colourful silk scarf instead,” observes stylist Khushi Kumar, who adds: “Colour blocking is in, but make sure you don’t wear more than two or three colours. Add some neon to your closet and make sure to juxtapose them against neutral shades.”

If you are enamoured by the yin and yang of black and white, you have the chance of wearing monochromes this season and there’s nothing quite like flaunting stripes on tops, dresses, and even on bags. The rains have brought about the need for layering up again. You could take to light layering of kimono shrugs and crop tops over dresses.

Since it hardly makes sense to wear denims this season, you could bring out your shorts but remember to go for thick fabrics in synthetic blends that allow for quick drying in case you’re caught in the rain. But if you can’t live without jeans, go for cropped versions. As far as tops and kurtas go, chiffons, crepes, muls, and georgettes are life savers during the rains.

Coming to trending prints and hues, Anaka states: “Floral and botanical prints are making a huge comeback after the summer. As far as colours go, we will see lots of greys, pastels, bright colours inspired by pop art, and warm shades or orange and red. Bright colours are great for overcast skies, but sometimes sober colours can also be reflective of the mood. It all depends on how you carry it off.”

“Light over coats or jackets conducive to the weather, in soft fabrics are a big yes. White rubber soled brogues are popular now,” observes finds. It’s time to stash away your favourite leather handbag and opt for a waterproof tote. Also, this is the perfect time to flaunt your colourful pair of flip flops for that casual look. Wellington boots are a stylish option. Statement jewellery is still popular but you could go for delicate patterns if you'd like. Of course, vibrant umbrellas, hats, scarves, and stoles would be needed to keep you a little cosy.It isn’t so difficult staying stylish in the rains now, is it?
