The second day of the Naturals Madras Couture Fashion Week (MCFW), Season 3, was elegant and punctuated with a display of colour and swagger.

Organised by Jupiter Events, the MCFW seeks to present a platform for budding designers to showcase their creations, and also helps them build relationships in the Chennai fashion industry.

Top models from Chennai and Bangalore walked the ramp, showcasing couture that struck a balance between the glamorous and the graceful. The event was interspersed with entertaining sessions of music, dance and comedy.

The designs by Deepika Pillai, a former model herself, featured lustrous dresses and floral gowns, paired with beautiful jewellery. The collection included blouses and saris with elaborate sequin work, besides flashy suit jackets with riotous patterns for men. The fusion wear of Audacious and The Alternate, by Nimisha Sara Philip and Sahil Jain, respectively, promoted fashion with a message. The collections highlighted two causes — the ‘Dark is Beautiful’ campaign by Women of Worth, and PETA’s ‘Go Fake for Animals’ Sake.’ The focus was on soft palettes — whites, creams and light blues — and classic colour combinations, with simplicity being the key. Jeeni, by Jeeva Mohan, showed off an array of glitzy wear for the bride and her friends. The colours were vibrant, the designs sophisticated, and the glamour quotient, restrained.

Fernand Ratier, drawing inspiration from the vintage Italian movie, Portier de Nuit, sought to ‘reinvent the sari’ for the bold, modern woman, and black was the reigning colour.

The GRT Chef Round was quite the surprise, with staff turning amateur models.

The final sequence by Naturals showcased an eclectic range of hairstyles and accessories, with purple being the leitmotif.
