To many, the dark wooden tables, red leather armchairs, warm service and delicious food of Ruci and idoni need no introduction. After it opened last May, the bistro on Road no.10, Banjara Hills, has become a staple joint for many young Hyderabadis but for the last few months they have been trying something quite different; every Wednesday afternoon, the restaurant offers a four-course meal exclusively for women.

Why Wednesdays, why lunch and why women? “When plans are made to eat out, it’s usually for dinner. We thought why not promote the restaurant during lunch hours and since that’s the time when we get groups of women, we were only too happy to provide a more enjoyable environment for them,” says manager Praveen.

The offer includes a soup, a drink, and a salad, a choice of appetisers, main course and dessert. The salad is made fresh according to the guest’s preference at the live salad counter making for an excellent start to the meal. The soup of the day is the Amish Chicken soup with corn rivels; while it’s familiar taste it a reminder of the classic sweet corn chicken soup that we grew up having, the tender chicken dumplings in it will come as a pleasant surprise. Choose between Devil eggs, Cheese corn balls, Mexican Nachos and Pizza polo alfredo for the appetisers. While Ruci has a reputation for their thin-crust pizza’s the pizza on offer, with its generous topping of chicken, cheese and sundried tomatoes, is one that is not on the daily menu and is definitely worth a try. Try not to eat too much though; the main course is on its way. In order to cater to loyal customers who stick to a few favourite dishes, the menu is a combination of regular and new dishes. You will find the popular Corn-fed chicken supreme on the list, along with the Grilled fish caponata and the Tagliatelle a’la cilantro. Cooked to perfection, topped with olive and bell pepper caponata, a traditional Italian cooked vegetable salad, and placed on a bed of flavoured herb rice; the grilled fish is a must-try for all non-vegetarians. For dessert, tuck into the mango cheesecake or a choice of ice cream. You may suspect it is too early in the year to expect a good mango cheesecake (the season hasn’t yet begun) you will not be too disappointed.

Although it is a Wednesday afternoon, the mood at Ruci and idoni is that of a leisurely Sunday afternoon. The sun bathed room is filled with mostly women, but also families enjoying good food and conversation. Lobhana, a tarot card reader adds to the charm; guests are free to get their cards read during lunch. While food is a big part of it the idea was to create a space where guests would feel comfortable, whether having a quick business lunch or spending long hours chatting with friends. The offer lasts from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and is priced at Rs.399.
