Khiran Kumar opens his bag and out tumble pendants and rings and photo frames with 3D figurines of real people. There’s one of a little boy on an electric bike, another of a young couple, whose faces have been embossed on pendants, and two children whose faces adorn a dangler.
Khiran of Kasikiran, a jewellery manufacturer based in RS Puram, says he thought of branching out into 3D jewellery featuring real people because he wanted to do something “different and interesting”, and go off the beaten track. “The jewellery business is very competitive and everyone is slashing prices and doing all they can to stay afloat. In all this, we tend to forget that gold is precious and exclusive. So, I wanted to create a premium line that celebrates gold,” he says.
He got his chance when a young couple walked in asking for something “different” for their wedding. Their faces were soon on two wedding rings!
So far, orders have been coming in through their website (kasikiran.com). People can go online, fill in specifications and then send them pictures. Even a medium-quality photo will do, but the face must be clear, says Khiran. Twenty-five working days after placing the order, Khiran delivers the product.
“These creations take time, because we have to get every feature right,” he says. The team works using CAD CAM, so that there is no scope of any error creeping in.
In the past one-and-a-half years, Kasikiran has made about 150 pieces. These creations cost roughly twice what traditional ornaments will cost, he says, because they are exclusive, customised pieces.
Kasikiran makes pendants, bracelets and danglers as part of its wearable collection and also creates pieces that look lovely as display — like the kid on a bike.
So far, Khiran has not publicised his product, and has been working only with retailers. From January, he plans to work with individual buyers too.
