A musical evening was organised in the Capital on World Music Day to commemorate legends Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Bhupen Hazarika, Mehdi Hassan, Jagjit Singh and Suchitra Mitra who all passed away in the last few months. Titled ‘Shradhanjali’, the event was presented by Oskus Entertainment Films and Promotions, and took place at Sri Satya Sai International auditorium.
The evening began with a performance by musician Azeem Alvi supported by Hafez on the tabla. Musicians Anupriya Deotale and Zohel Khan impressed the audience with raga Gorakh Kalyan. Fareed Hasan presented a composition in Bhageshri and also sang a thumr i. Mayukh Hazarika, nephew of Bhupen Hazarika, sang ‘Buku hom hom kore”, the Assamese version of ‘Dil hoom hoom kare’ from Rudali , penned by his uncle. He also sang ‘Kohua bon’, a popular Bhupenda song in Assamese that advocates for respecting each moment of life Yet another musician Anand Parmar sang the songs ‘Mere sanso me basa hai, tera he eke naam’ from the film Aur Pyar Ho Gaya and ‘hansani’ from Zehreela Insaan in his melodious voice. Singer Manu Bharadwaj chanted lines of the composition ‘Mile sur mera tumhara’ and dedicated Jagjit Singh’s ‘Tumko dekha to ye khayal aya’ to all the departed legends.
Lastly, the band Aghaaz presented an energising performance in Sufi style.
S.M. Sadik, Punjabi lyricist and poet who has written more than 35,000 songs, columnist Kuldip Nayar, Arpita Bansal of Atelier magazine and Rajni Basumatary, owner, Manna Films, were honoured at the event. Ashok Rajput, Director of OSKUS Entertainment, said, “It was held for the legends because they showed us the way of love via music.”
