DJ Steve Aoki enjoys making music as well as running a restaurant and a clothing line

It is all happening in Bangalore. This weekend we have American Electro House DJ and Grammy nominated record producer, Steve Aoki headlining the second edition of Sound Awake. Steve has his own label, Dim Mak Records and has remixed many artistes and bands. Music apart, he has his own line of clothing, co-owns two restaurants, and also a management company! In this email interview, Steve talks about coming to town among other things.

Your thoughts on the EDM scene in Bangalore.

Last year I played at Bombay and in Delhi and both shows went great. I was happy to see how much the audience knew, loved and cared about dance music as a genre. The energy from the crowd was wonderful. I’m looking forward to playing at Sound Awake in Bangalore. Since I haven’t got a chance to see what the EDM scene is like there, I’m waiting to see how crazy it will get.

How would you describe your signature sound?

I make music for the clubs... the kind of music that is heard at either clubs and/or festivals. When I produce music, I see it as a journey which dives deep into the psyche of emotions and touches people.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I’ve been inspired by a lot of artists, more by bands rather than by DJ’s. Band’s like Nirvana, Linkin Park, the Beatles, Rage Against the Machine, and many more.

Which has been your most memorable collaboration so far?

I would have to say my collaboration with Linkin Park had to be my favourite. It was great working with them; they’re a great band whose music has influenced me over the years.

What are the trends you forecast for electronic dance music in 2014?

EDM has grown so much over the years, so has music in general. Artistes and producers have to go all out in order to keep up with the growing trends and changing interests of the people.

You are a successful businessman too, what do you enjoy more? Music or your other ventures?

I enjoy both because I look at business and music as forms of art. I am a creative person and looking at business and all its aspects as a creative journey is what makes it interesting for me. I try and maintain a balance between both these aspects of my life.

Future plans and projects…

I’m releasing an album next year called Neon Future which I’m very excited about. I’ve collaborated with some great artists like Snoop Dogg, Will.i.am, Machine Gun Kelly, Mac Miller and many more. I can’t wait for people to hear this album.

Steve Aoki will play at Sound Awake on December 1, 2013, at Supernova Arena and Convention Centre, Yelahanka, Bangalore. For tickets, log onto www.soundawakeindia.com or www.ticketgenie.in
