Yam varuval

Yam varuval

Yam Varuval is a dish close to my heart as it was taught to me by my favourite grandmother. To get a better flavour keep the marinated yam pieces in a winnow ( muram ) in the sun for half an hour.

What you need

Yam - 1/4 kg

Tamarind – lemon-sized ball

Shallots - 1 cup

Chilli powder - 1 tbsp

Turmeric powder - 1 tbsp

Salt - 1 tbsp

Fennel (sombu) - 1/2 tbsp

Cooking instructions

Cut the yam into rectangular pieces and parboil it with the tamarind. Drain the water and keep aside. Grind the shallots, chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and fennel into a fine paste. Apply the paste on the boiled yam pieces and let marinate for 30 minutes. Shallow fry the pieces and serve hot.
