Sick and tired of all the V-Day mush? How about the weirdest Valentine’s Day ever? City folk share their bizarre V-Day experiences including back-to-back dates backfiring, running into the ex with his supermodel girlfriend, going on a blind date with someone dressed like Bobby Deol in Dostana on his date with Piggy Chops!

Soumya Jacob, a collegian, recounts: “The weirdest Valentine’s date I’ve been on was one where the guy refused to even offer to pay. He just sat there, like a statue, when the bill arrived. He saw me take out my wallet and didn’t even offer to split the bill! That was the last time I saw him.”

“Five years ago, I had just started dating the girl I’m married to now,” says Shashank Kumar, an audio engineer. “I hadn’t told my family about her yet. On Valentine’s Day, I decided to take her to this beautiful rooftop restaurant for dinner and told my parents that I had an after-work party to attend. Everything started off well until we were led to our table and right across the restaurant I spotted my parents looking closely to see if it was really me! I was forced to introduce my girlfriend to them, I obviously couldn’t leave the place after that, it was the most uncomfortable date.”

Sometimes TV shows are not as far from reality.Remember how Ted Mosby ends up going on a second “first” date with a girl he went on the first date with seven years ago? Ritushee Gorde, a beauty blogger, had a similar experience. “After a messy break-up with my long-term boyfriend, six years ago, I hadn’t dated for three years. My friends would pester me to meet new people, hangout with common friends, but I never got around to doing so. In 2012, all my three best friends were in steady relationships and had plans for Valentine’s Day. And I still can’t remember why I agreed to go on a blind date with one of their boyfriend’s friend who turned out to be the guy I went to our graduation ball with, who I remember not liking one bit!,” she narrates.

Being stood up is not uncommon but waiting in your finest, with a bunch of roses in your hand, at a chic pub, on Valentine’s Day, only to be ditched without notice, is perhaps the most humiliating experience. Karan Aleyas, a HR intern, says: “I had just met a girl from my sister’s college and she wasn’t my type at all. She was not the kind of girl I thought I would fall for because we were so different. In some way, I always considered myself better than her, looks and otherwise. And she was the one who stood me up on Valentine’s Day last year, and till today, I have no reason why. It was embarrassing and peculiar then but now I think I probably deserved it for having such an inflated ego.”

Sometimes, for some people, the trick perhaps is to not let people know how weird they are until it’s too late for the other person to back out.
