Bollywood’s new entrant Varun Dhawan maybe just one film old, but he’s already played three roles — a school student and a rock star in Student of the Year , and recently, an astronaut.
Varun was in character as the “astronaut” who launched Adlabs Imagica’s newest scare-fest — Deep Space — India’s largest indoor roller coaster that extends to a height of 56 feet and clocks a speed of 85 km per hour — in the dark! Being an adventure lover and fitness buff, Varun braved the ride on a rainy day but “it is definitely not for the faint-hearted!” he warns of the “insane experience”.
In a telephonic interview, Varun talks about his adventurous streak in movies and life in general.
Are you an adrenaline junkie?
I like adventures but I do not go on trips specifically to try and kill myself. I have jumped off a cliff into the water and tried other such daring acts.
What is the most adventurous thing you have done?
When I was about nine-years-old I had gone on a holiday with my parents to Switzerland. When we were at a shopping mall, I got lost and ventured outside. I didn’t know anyone or anything. I was by myself for over two hours. Then a couple found me roaming the streets, and I asked them to take me to the cops. They took me to a shop called Cops instead. And my parents were actually there! That was the most adventurous experience I’ve had.
What is your favourite adventure holiday destination?
I mostly travel on leisure. But I would love to travel to Argentina and Brazil to experience the adventure there.
What is the most adventurous thing you’d do when it comes to your career in films?
That would be in terms of choosing genres. There’s nothing more risky than trying out various genres and roles.
How has life changed for you afterStudent of the Year?
It has and hasn’t. I don’t really feel like a star as I have done only one film. And it’s too soon. But those who have seen the movie do recognise me and people in general are warm towards me.
Your next film —Main Tera Hero— will be directed by your father.
I am privileged to have him as my father. Now I have the opportunity to get to know David Dhawan the director. I look forward to working with him and learning as much as I can from him.
