Do you, like me, involuntarily lean back and look over your Uber driver’s phone and try and see what he has rated you? Do you wonder whether the lack of available cabs is because of a bad rating by that one driver, who seemed rather unhappy when you were en route from a late-night party, and spoke to him about the lack of reliable commute options at night?

If these questions have bothered you a lot lately, you are in luck. Earlier, you would have had to email Uber and wait for someone to respond on mail, to get information about what drivers might have rated you.

With a small tweak, Uber now allows passengers to check their passenger ratings. All you have to do is to get on to the app, click the bar on the top left, click help, go to account and scroll down, and click ‘I’d like to know my rating’, and voila, your rating will be flashed on screen immediately.

This is why you see a figures such as 4.92, 5 or 4.7, appearing as updates on social media platforms, as riders share their ratings and strive to better them. Many others are challenging friends and family to display their own ratings.

Suman Singh, who rides an Uber taxi in Bangalore, is thrilled about the latest update. “Some passengers would be drunk, abusive, give me the wrong drop address, and then top it up with a low rating for me. It is good to see passengers also strive for a ‘5’ rating. It will be good for us.”

Prashant Mathur, an architect with a perfect score of 5, says, “I am really thrilled. When I clicked on submit and waited for the rating, I experienced the same goosebumps I felt when my school exam results were declared. I think my rating is because I am civil to the drivers. I do not make a fuss about routes and do not indulge in backseat driving.”

Engineer Sumit Singh is distraught with his rating of 4.35. “I think my ratings have come down in the last couple of months. I do not even remember any bad experiences that would have resulted in a plunge in my ratings. I remember checking my rating on mail and I clocked 4.81. I need to pull up my socks and work on becoming a better passenger, and get the perfect rating.”

P.S.: I got a rating of 4.72. My immediate aim is to hone my communication skills and achieve that realistic 4.9 figure to start with, before aiming for the top score.

So, next time, smile broadly at the driver once your ride is finished, check out your passenger rating, and boast about it at the office water cooler.

To get the Perfect score

Be civil and courteous to the driver.

Provide correct directions to your location and drop point.

Be ready at the pick-up point and try not to keep the driver waiting.

Do not act drunk or be abusive.

Be civil in dealing with other people on the road.
