Handloom spells comfort. So how about making that a style statement? Weavers’ Village, under C.P. Rajendran and Sons Karalkada, sets about to do that. Starting today (September 6), it holds its first exhibition on the first floor of the Karalkada showroom near Kaithamukku.
“Weavers’ Village is essentially a venture for the benefit of the weaving community who has been associated with Karalkada for many years. We’ve a range of custom-made products. In addition, we plan to give a makeover for the handloom,” says Sobha Ashwin, founder of Weavers’ Village and co-owner of C. P. Rajendran and Sons, Karalkada.
She adds: “We give a platform for young designers, who give a new look to handloom. The products come with motifs related to Kerala and its culture.”
The exhibition has handloom products for women of all age groups. There are designer Kerala saris and settu-mundu with different kinds of embroidery, cut work, patch work, bead work and the like. The show stopper is the davani collection, which has unstitched tops, umbrella skirts and net dupattas. Midi-tops for young girls and designer kurtis are also available. “The midis come as wrap arounds and umbrella skirts,” she says.
Then there are cotton and fibre bags and jewellery made of terracotta, fabric, paper and thread.
“You can pick matching jewellery for the dress you buy and for a sari worth Rs. 10,000 we are giving a complimentary jhumka as well,” Sobha says. The exhibition is on throughout the festival season. Contact: weaversvillage@gmail.com.
