With Diwali round the corner, many might want to spruce up their lifestyle, with ‘new buys’. And an exclusive crafts exhibition-cum-sale has ushered in the right celebration mood in the city. If you are eager to update wardrobes and willing to shell out, Maditssia auditorium is the place. The crafts fair sponsored by Ministry of Textiles and organized by North Eastern Handicrafts & Handloom Development Corporation showcases a fine fusion of merchandise from the North Eastern States.

The collection displays an array of bamboo and cane products that are sheer artistic blend of beauty and utility. Women can have a gala time shopping here as there is a wide range of saris, stoles, dupattas, salwars, kurtis and other Indian outfits in all traditional designs, colours and sizes. Woven under rural cluster initiatives these immaculate pieces of fabrics confer a true ethnic vibrancy on the bearer. Eri and muga silks in mystic prints and lucid colors form the highlight of the textiles. Kantha embroidery on tussar silk, meenakari on kota silk and appliqué cum mirror work on cottons form top-of-the-line handmade sorts for Rs.1,200 upwards.

“This is the second time the North East crafts have hit Madurai. The response is quite good and we expect more crowd on the weekend” says Mr. K.Bala Sundar, Exhibition-in-charge.

Those keen on giving their home a new look, can enjoy numerous options to pick from. Liven up your living room with a cane sofa set or antiques like brass wall clocks, palm leaf painting wall-hangings, bamboo made lampshades, chandeliers, wood carved door panels, jute carpets and flower vases. Art connoisseurs can fall for enticing miniature table-top accessories and life size props, like wood made toys and bell metal handicrafts. The event also displays home decors like block printed, embroidered cushions, bed sheets, curtains and fancy floor mats.

Apart from these festival choices, the exhibition also feeds daily fantasies with tribal chokers, danglers, colourful wood bangles, bamboo pouches and clutches, bandhani and mirror jholas, picnic bags, kurtis, salwars and chunky footwear. So, get crafty, plan your pick here this Diwali. The event is on till Monday at the Maditssia Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
