Gone are the days when summer camps were only about painting and acting.
Artistes from various fields raise the bar by bringing exciting artsy activities for children in Sandbox Collective’s ArtReach Summer workshops.
Magazine Majaa by Vidya Mani will bring children together to create their own magazines, just the way it is done in the real world, with ideation, stories, design and illustrations.
Pavithra Reddy’s Just Dance workshop will focus on how the body conditions itself for dance and there will be an introduction to Odissi, besides a focus on movement and facial expressions. “When teaching children, the main focus is for them to gain an interest in the classical dance form and be comfortable with any kind of movement. Sessions with children are a learning experience. You never know what they will come up with and it challenges me to get creative with them on the spot.”
Tune-in , a music workshop by Rohini Raghunanadan, will have children create their own lyrics.
“I am looking forward to this as I enjoy working with children and we have some fun activities lined up. I hope the workshop will be the start of a new lifetime relationship with music and help take the pressure of from their lives.”
Sujay Saple’s Body Speak workshop will teach children how to create stories using movement theatre.
Actor-director Sujay says, “I think the one-day format is exciting for me as it involves a certain rigour. We start from scratch with a group of children who don’t know each other- and eight hours later we have a close knit group that has learned to work together and create with their bodies and their imagination — that is truly the magic of theatre!”
With Pop-Up Story Book , Sadhvi Jawa uses the elements “of book pop-up to become props and settings of the story accompanied by paper puppets that form the characters of the story.” Tsohil Bhatia’s Performance and Camera, “aims at making kids familiar with the camera and the possibilities in choreographed photographs,” says Tsohil. “Each participant is encouraged to take up responsibilities of various aspects of art direction as he or she works in a group towards making a detailed image. The kids make a temporary world and play various characters from their imagination, which remains archived as a photograph. The workshop focuses on craft, storytelling, costume making, photography and most importantly doing all of the above collectively.”
What makes the workshops more exciting is that they will be conducted in two creative spaces, Atta Galatta (Koramangala) and Kavade Attic (Seshadripuram).
Nimi Ravindran, co-founder of Sandbox Collective, says they have always been committed to exposing children to the world of art, having earlier conducted day-long trips, called ArtTripping, to artiste’s places to see how they live and work and partnering with Nrityagram to show them an alternate way of life.
“At the end of the workshop, parents will see what their children have created. We didn’t want run-of-the-mill workshops. We want to awaken interest in the arts for children to take something up.”
The workshops will be held between April 22 and April 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a lunch break.
Seats are limited to 24 on a first come, first served basis.
