Wraparound shirts, bat-sleeve and cowl-necked tops from Fabels, Fabindia’s western wear label, are puzzles in cloth which first arouse curiosity. You take the hanger from which hangs a garment; you then turn it around this way and that. The design elements is strong and very modern; it’s no wonder since the launch collection has been conceptualised by Alistair Blair, a designer who has been associated with labels such as Dior, Valentino, Givenchy, Cerruti and Chloe.

Fabindia has over the years has become synonymous with a particular brand of Indo-Western and Indian wear which makes use of India’s mammoth variety and range of fabrics and other surface embellishment techniques. Fabindia’s latest offering, launched recently in a brand new store at Lulu Mall, is a high-end designer prêt line with an accent on western wear.

Kochi follows Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, where the collection was unveiled. “The time is ripe in Kochi for this collection, Kochi is ready for it,” says Archana Nandal, market head Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, Fabindia. She adds that it is an honest, sophisticated western wear line. Fabels has a dedicated space in the store Fabindia where the line will be showcased.

The coordinated ensembles include structured jackets, waistcoats, trousers, shirts, skirts, dresses as well as accessories such as scarves, jewellery, bags and shoes. The designs and the colour stories maybe western but Fabels uses Indian weaves, block prints and hand embroidery techniques. Therefore there are block printed shift and blouse dresses, chikaankari tunics, Chanderi sari shirts among other garments.

The highlights of the collection are the classic western cuts and styles for men and women. “The collection targets those who are looking for good quality western wear. It is a label for the discerning buyer,” adds Archana.
