Darshan S. is 12 years old and will probably give a complex to other children his age. He is every ambitious parents’ dream son. Why? Because he “excels in studies” and is a star on the rise in the world of dance – both western and classical. He has won awards and competitions in both fields. Darshan has also been offered roles in Kannada films, “but I said no, as I have to give importance to my education.”
He exudes confidence, and is not even camera shy. “ Is this pose good? Or is this better?”
After spotting his fascination for dance, his grandfather introduced him to the world of western classical dance. “I am learning at Rhythms in Rajajinagar. But I draw my inspiration from Prabhudeva. His style is good and his body flexible,” explains Darshan.
The young boy was lured to the classical world of Bharatanatyam. “I am currently learning from Hemamalini in Rajajinagar. But when it comes to choosing between western and Bharatanatyam, I will choose the former, because it’s easier to learn and fun to perform. We can also add in cartwheels, jumps and stunts as part of the choreography,” smiles the smart boy.
He has been performing on stage for quite some time now. “And, no I do not get jittery while on stage. In fact, I enjoy the attention and the applause I get,” says the born performer. Darshan dreams of becoming an IPS officer and says he will pursue dance even when he completes his education.
He has been awarded the Michael Jackson Award at a state-level competition and is the winner of several other prizes too.
“I like to study, but dance has helped me become more confident and bold,” adds Darshan.
