Your eyes are your windows to the world, they help you see and discern colours. To envision the world in all its hues, the eyes are wonderful organs conveying the colours to the brain. To ensure that your eyes continue to function well there is a lining of moisture over the conjunctiva which affords comfort. Tears are not just shed due to emotion but they also keep the eyes moist.

Tears are nothing but a combination of water for moisture, oils for lubrication, mucous for even spreading so that antibodies and special proteins are evenly spread along the eye to improve resistance against infection. These tears are secreted by the lachrymal glands in the eyes. A person develops dry eyes when these tears seem to be secreted less than the required amount.

With insufficient lubrication along the lining of the eyes, a person is likely to develop pain and a sensitivity to light. A sand like or gritty sensation in the eyes is the usual symptom, as if a foreign body is making life difficult for the individual, for dry eyes. The resultant itching sensation causes the person to rub their eyes leading to redness. However, this constant rubbing causes the vision to blur.

If the body pushes the lachrymal glands to produce more tears it is likely that these tears are devoid of the mucous and the moisturising capacity. Since the composition of these tears is inadequate there is not enough lubrication in the eyes. Although these tears wash away the debris in the eyes, they are not good enough to coat the eye surface properly.

Dryness of the eyes can be caused by ageing and especially in women during menopause. Certain drugs like birth control pills and anti-histamines are known to precipitate the issue. There are certain auto immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s disease etc. wherein the defense mechanism tends to affect vital organs and as a result the lachrymal glands too might be affected, causing dryness of the eyes. An abnormality in the structure of the eyelids can cause an undue pressure and the result in dryness due to friction.

There may be several over the counter teardrops that can help improve moisture in the eyes.

Homeopathic medicine has good remedies that help to gradually stimulate the tear producing glands to improve production of tears. Ars alb is a good remedy that will help counter the problem in patients with auto immune problems, while Bryonia and Alumina will coax the gland to produce more tears. In cases in whom there is appearance of enough tears but not good quality, Natrum mur is a good remedy. To see that the need for artificial teardrops is reduced gradually these remedies are very useful.

Adenoids

My child of five years snores all night and has difficulty waking up in the morning. He also tends to have recurrent colds and coughs. – abc

Adenoids are a couple of glands in the airway passage which obstruct the flow and cause snoring. Homeopathic medicine has good remedies like Baryta iod, Thuja, Calc carb, Phos. etc. which will help in seeing that the adenoids shrink and other interventions are ruled out.
