Basava Ambara will present Rehwa’s festive collection of Maheshwari textiles inspired by Kashmiri shawls.
Titled Naqqash, the collection features delicate paisley motifs that run along the borders and pallus on hand-woven, printed and embroidered Maheshwari weaves.
“I went through a lot of books while preparing for the festival collection,” says Sunanda Dawar, of Rehwa, who has designed the line. “I was looking to do something that is different from our existing or previous collections and this idea of Kashmiri shawls excited me. We have tried to achieve the effect through block printing. The paisleys are classic, they never look old and they can be rendered in contemporary as well as classic styles.”
The collection is a combination of woven and printed textiles in a range of colours, including green, mustard, maroon, beige and red.
“Maheshwari handlooms are beautiful gossamer fabrics that are a play of silk and cotton. One can combine silk and cotton and play with colours and yarns to come up with innumerable combinations. While the colours and prints are inspired by the Kashmiri shawls, the borders are classic Maheshwari and have been worked on to fit in with the prints,” explains Sunanda.
The collection, priced at Rs 1100 upwards will showcase saris and dupattas with matching fabric.
The proceeds from sales of this exhibition go towards supporting education, health care and housing for the weavers of Maheshwari.
The collection will be on view on August 16 and 17 at Rain Tree, 4, Sankey Road, High Grounds, opposite Hotel Windsor Manor.
