What’s the style and print of the season? NEETI SARKAR says florals are talking big on printed trousers. Besides that, bright watercolour prints, wild animal prints, loud stripes and mild texture prints

Denims have been considered staple in our wardrobes since forever. But the time has now come to embrace a fast growing trend, that of printed trousers. From chevron print ankle pants and cropped polka dot trousers to monochrome ones or even pants that flaunt animal motifs, prints are in and they aren’t limited to top wear anymore. From cropped to slouchy, there are innumerable ways to wear prints this winter. Stylist Pranita Mehta says: “It’s a relief to have printed trousers give a break to the colour-dipped legs I could see moving everywhere on the streets. Printed bottoms have brought in some level of graphic interaction between our clothes and the world around, shifting the concept from the regular graphic-tee style. You can go subtle or loud depending on what kind of prints you choose and the way you style them.”

Fashionistas believe this trend is here to stay. Fashion blogger Kanika Karvinkop says: “I love printed trousers and they will definitely stay on through fall. Printed pants suits everyone as long as you know how and with what to wear it which means if you’re wearing them, it’s better to keep the rest of the outfit low key.”

Freelance fashion designer Mehek Rajsingh feels: “Printed trousers are loved for their versatility. You can either dress them up or down depending on the occasion. Also, there are a variety of styles and silhouettes to choose from. Whether it’s a pair of floral palazzo pants or geometric print cigarette denims, there are so many ways to wear the trend.”

If you’re wondering what prints are popular on pants this season, Pranita says: “Florals are talking big on printed trousers. Besides that, bright watercolour prints, wild animal prints, loud stripes and mild texture prints – in both light and dark colours are flooding the market right now.”

According to Kanika who took to the tropical Hawaiian print trouser trend in summer, “graphic and edgy geometric prints and stripes are in as well this winter.” Vintage horizontal prints and big paisley patterns on pants are also grabbing eyeballs.

Giving out a few tips on how to flaunt the trend, Pranita says: “I always try to balance my outfit with a combination of prints and solids. When wearing printed trousers, I would pair it with a contrasting solid tee/blouse and a neutral pair of shoes. I’d pull off the look with a tote and I’d be good to go — comfy and casual. Alternatively, adding loads of chunky arm-candy, high heels and a statement clutch would give one a dressed-up look.”

For Kanika who loves to accessorise, “A few gold cuffs or cute chains will make the pants look even better. To keep the pants the centre of attention it’s better to wear softer colours on top but if you think you can carry off the print on print trend then there’s nothing better than that,” she believes.

With all these tidbits of advice, are there some precautionary measures to be taken into account when flaunting printed trousers? Pranita says: “You need to understand that printed trousers shift the focus from your torso to the lower half of your body so you better fit into your pants properly!”
