Forward looking that embodies traditional craftsmanship is how Simon Carter, arguably one of the most sought after international designers, describes his creative style.

A defining moment in 1985 would turn Simon, a graduate in Immunology, into a designer. His first creation was a vintage 1930s motorcyclist brooch in pewter, for which he found takers. Ever since, there has been no looking back for him.

Today, Simon Carter’s accessories and clothing for men has outlets in Japan, Australia, (where it is the most well known brand for suits), United States and Canada.

His latest 2012 Autumn-Winter Collection, showcased as part The Collective’s the Best of British event being held this whole month, includes exquisite silk ties, cufflinks, collar stiffeners and other sophisticated apparel, has “a London feel to it and has been designed keeping in mind 1960’s Cavalry Street. “There are cufflinks made of Swarovski crystals, onyx and mother of pearl dyed blue and in their natural white state. There are jackets with checks inside that render a modern look,” Simon describes.

His creations are re-interpretations of a classic style that are made relevant to the customer. “The products.” he further says “are original designs, of excellent quality and have a superb value for money.”

Among the designers Simon admires are Paul Smith and architect Edwin Lutyens. Although he is inspired by architecture, anything stylish draws him too. “While I was travelling down 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar, I liked the writing on the wall which inspired me. Like this, I am always on the lookout for different designs.” He plans to incorporate Indian fabric in his upcoming bag collection.

The word “designer” to Simon is “over used.” Most designers to him are “sophisticated stylists.” A lesser known fact about Simon is that he played croquet for England.

Simon Carter’s 2012 Autumn Winter Collection is available at the Collective, 10, Vittal Mallya Road.
