Diwali shopping is something that remains a top priority for most families. The shopping list usually features fireworks, home décor, sweets and most importantly clothes. Numerous days are spent trying to zero in on what to wear.
And let’s face it, resolving that along with your hair and make-up is a bit of a task. To make things easier, here’s a complete guide to prepping up that’ll take you through the day.
The outfit
Yes, the traditional lehenga and sari are the most popular choices but its time to move on to newer styles. For several young women, Diwali dressing constitutes fusing traditionalism with western aesthetics. Designer Raghavendra Rathore suggests experimenting with a bandhgala for the occasion, “A classic velvet bandhgala jacket with immaculate gold thread embroidery is an example of subtle style. That worn along with a pair of silk gold breeches will bring out the rich appeal of the attire. Additionally, old world techniques that use gold threads, sequins and pearl embroidery add lustre to the quintessential bandhgala. ”
While a bandhgala is a popular option, another way of infusing a traditional spirit into your outfit is by sporting a cocktail dress with customary Indian embroidery or ethnic prints. If that’s not your style you can opt for traditional choices. “A sari, half-sari or an Anarkali are absolutely festive and elegant. A traditional Kanjeevaram in organza fabric worn as a half-sari, or a Chanderi or Kanjeevaram dupatta worn with an elegant Anarkali in matka silk has a festive look without being too flashy,” says designer Gaurang Shah.
The make-up
The next most significant part of your ensemble is the make–up. Celebrity hair and make-up artist Daniel Bauer who has been a hit with celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, recommends a glossy look for the season, “Gloss is something that works well with all Indian skin tones. This season is about opulent and glossy-winged eyes where the colour palette includes teal, deep blues and a stunning metallic bronze. As for the lips, it’s vital that you choose the right gloss lipstick that works with your complexion.” Bauer recommends colours such as plum, wine, coral pink and the signature rustic red for the lips.
The Hair
With your outfit and make-up in check, its time to add glamour to your hair style. A popular choice during the festival season is a loose bun. “Whatever the hairstyle, the key is giving your hair texture. Textured hair is making statements on the runway and on red carpets all over the world. To begin with, blow-dry your hair and apply a handful of mousse with your fingertips. For thicker hair, use more; for thinner hair, use less. Comb your hair backwards. Now, tightly brush the sides of your hair and pull all of your hair into a medium high ponytail. The sides should look smooth, while the hair at the crown should have texture and look slightly loose. Divide the ponytail into two sections; twist and wrap around the knot. Use a hair spray to hold it in place. This look is a steady favourite of Deepika Padukone and I gave her this hairstyle for the IIFA Awards.”
