Badminton champion Saina Nehwal.

She might not have scorched the fashion world with her glam look, she might not be the face of a beauty brand, but she surely has become a role model for millions of girls who dream of success and limelight.

She has created waves by winning three consecutive international titles and is now looking forward to the London Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

Saina Nehwal, India's leading badminton player and world's number 2, gets candid in a chat with NXg about success, style and super wins.

A fighter

“Feels great to taste success at an early age but it's quite tough at the same time. One really needs to balance the media glare and personal life. I do believe in looking good, dressing smartly and enjoying girly things in life, but I am a fighter at the end. I need to perform well to maintain the position where I am now. So far I have got excellent support not just from the public but even from my sponsors,” reveals Saina.

Believe in beauty

That's what our diva has to say when it comes to her beauty preferences. “Since most of the time I'm busy with my practice and travel, I don't get much time to shop. But that doesn't mean I don't like to indulge in such things. I believe in looking good. While I may not be very comfortable with an artificial look, I make sure that I'm not going out without some touch up. A nice lipstick, kohl , liner or mascara is enough to make me look good,” confirms the champ. She further adds, “I do make sure that the products that I use are of good quality. Usually, my mom shops for me.”

Business of fashion

I have walked the ramp and it really felt good but, on a serious note, I really don't understand the fashion of models. How do they carry off such big heels when you have sporty footwears around? I can't take the level of discomfort. I can wear chic footwear for a while but for the entire outdoor routine, it has to be a flat style only.

Fashion statement

In terms of dressing, I believe in wearing branded clothes. The stuff should be good and make me feel comfortable. I like to wear simple T-Shirts and nice jeans whenever I go out. Casual is my fashion statement but I don't mind wearing something trendy too. If I have to promote myself and my field, I am supposed to look nice and groomed in public glare.

Get fit

I feel everyone should be involved in some kind of sport. My sport is my fitness mantra and I would like to promote this. Today more and more girls are coming into sports and working hard to go up the ranking scale.

Any physical activity is really good to make your personality better. You might be wearing a nice outfit and a perfect make up but if are out of shape, it can be a turn off. Personally, I like to greet people with good personality.
