Give the shorts a shot

Ever since Kapoor & Sons hit theatres, we’ve been crushing on Alia Bhatt’s wardrobe, especially those cute little shorts. And with the temperature soaring, they seem to be the perfect way to stay cool.

One of the best things about shorts is that they are so versatile. Apart from the fact that you could wear them through every fashion season, there is a variety of flattering styles to choose from depending upon your taste and body type. Here are five fun ways to wear shorts this summer.

Denim cut offs

Jorts or denim shorts have never gone out of style and with the nautical theme trending, team your denim cut-offs with a Breton striped top or tee. Experiment with colour. Stripes this season could even feature hues such as red and orange against the classic white and navy blue. If you like the low-slung variety, you could pair them with a fitted black racer-back top tucked in and a sleek belt to look smarter. Graphic print tees would look fab as would a casual plaid shirt. High-waisted denim cut offs, which make your legs appear longer and highlights a slim waist, work well with cropped tops and with off-shoulder ones too. Wear your favourite pair of sneakers and you are good to go. And if you are unsure about how to dress up cut-off shorts or ones with cuffs, fashion designer, Niyati Manoj suggests you team them up with “a crisp white button down top and strappy sandals. Don’t forget beachy waves look great so wear your hair that way. A chambray top is another smart option.” When we talk of cut offs, mid length and knee-length varieties are also popular.

Tropical prints

There is something about summer days and foliage prints that make everything so pretty! “Think florals, palms, and fruit prints this season,” says ad stylist, Khushi Sanal Kumar. She adds: “They look great with flat gladiator sandals in tan and nude shades. You could also opt for metallic flatforms. Mirrored aviators are a must-have.” Tropical prints also work as short-sets or co-ords. You needn’t expose your midriff but instead show a narrow strip of skin just above your waist, to break up the look.

Crochet/lace shorts

Crochet is considered a super chic option especially if you’re off on a beach vacation. Sure those bralettes and off-shoulder tops have a charm of their own but this time around, fashionistas are shining the spotlight on the oh-so-feminine crochet shorts. “The lace on lace trend is really cool and I would wear a bright crochet top over off-white crochet shorts. They also look great with button down shirts in coral, sea green, and black. A chambray tie-up top is perfect for a casual day out with friends. You could wear wedges to match,” says lifestyle blogger, Kritii Grover.

One of the best things about wearing crochet shorts is that you could accessorise in so many interesting ways. From colourful, chunky neckpieces and simple long chains with maritime motifs for pendants to midi rings and vintage cuff bracelets, use your imagination to jazz up your look.

Shortalls

Overalls, a childhood staple, has never looked this stylish before. And partly, you’ve got the Minions to thank for this. Short overalls or overall shorts are a great way to wear denim this summer. If you aren’t going to cringe about revisiting the 80s or if you’re aiming at that school-girly look, team your shortalls with a tie-neck top. Stripes are classy. Wear them under your short overalls and with your white platform sneakers maybe. The acid-wash variety is a huge hit among A-listers in Hollywood, so get your game on with these. If you’ve got a toned midriff to flaunt, team it with a crop top or a black bralette. Tie-dye dungarees in breathable fabrics and pastel shades are also recommended.

Skorts

If you like skirts as much as you do shorts, you should be stocking up on skorts this summer. After all, they’ve graced the runways at New York, Paris, and Milan, before they found their way onto the streets. Since they are usually really short, you might want to pair them with longer tops. With skorts, you could experiment with colour. “If you’re wearing printed/checkered/heavily patterned top, go for a skort in a single bold shade. While white is a classic, you could opt for orange or a lemony yellow.

Tropical, animal, and tribal prints are for when you wear a plain top in a neutral shade preferably. Monochrome skorts are quite the bomb now,” says collegian Rishvi Xavier.
