This is a special year for Indian cinema as it celebrates 100 happy years. Paying tribute to its influence on fashion, the online portal, Fashionara.com, is offering customers a range of looks inspired by Bollywood. This means you can now dress like divas Sharmila Tagore, Dimple Kapadia, Rani Mukherjee and Sonam Kapoor with the site’s look book which takes you through the fashion trends from the 1950s to 2010.
Seema Varma, creative vice president of Fashionara says: “Look books work as a trend forecast for us. We only feature what is trending. We even suggest how clothes can be styled or worn differently or what goes with what. All products are wearable, accessible and suit all body types and budgets.”
Seema says: “I am a Bollywood buff and love its fashion. Given that the industry is celebrating its centenary year and considering Bollywood and cricket are very popular in India, we decided to put together a look book as an ode.”
Of the process that went into putting it together, she says: “It took us a long time. We had various thoughts. We had to decide whether we would pick up fashionable actors from different times or go for creating looks of key characters in Indian cinema. Also, we had to work on a time period from the 50s till 2010 and they had to be characters who people could immediately relate to considering it would be our models and not the actors in the look book. Then we had to draw up grids and graphs to zero in on the looks. Our photographers were briefed and they did their research too.”
The look book feels like a run through decades of Hindi cinema inspired fashion.
There is the look inspired by the love triangle featuring Raj Kapoor, Nargis and Dilip Kumar in Andaz. Sharmila Tagore (in a polka dot saree) and Rajesh Khanna personify the swinging sixties while Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh from Khel Khel Mein embody the Seventies look.
Then comes the disco era of the Eighties with all the associated bling. We see the 90s inspired largely by Madhuri Dixit from Raja . Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee’s styling in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai makes an appearance. Style icon Sonam Kapoor starrer, Aisha gets a representation for 2010.
“We’ve tried to make it as authentic as possible. So our photographers researched the lighting that was used during that particular time period in Indian cinema, graininess of pictures taken back then and so on. The art team delved into details such as the fonts used and the colour schemes for posters of the era.”
And for people wondering how they can buy these looks, Seema says: “All these products are available on our website and are very fashionable today. For example, polka dots, the bohemian look, feminine sandals, colour block t shirts for men, etc are making a comeback.
So shopping the look does not only mean marrying the fashion of Bollywood but it also means you’ll always be in style.”
