It’s the New Year but some of our fashion dilemmas are, well, not so new. Worries like where to shop, what to buy and how to stand out at social events will continue to plague us. With the growing trend of dressing up even for house parties it has now become the norm to look stylish at social gatherings irrespective of the scale.

Whether you are having people over or stepping out, a party is a party when the hosts and guests look like they have put in some effort. If you are not miss fancy pants, that’s fine — even embellishing a simple outfit with statement accessories or footwear can do the trick. She insists on being event-appropriate as trying too hard to stand out does not come across as chic.

Perfect party look

Comfort married with quirk and maintaining individuality are the perfect ingredients for party style.

Do not follow the herd mentality and wear the trendiest outfit, chances are many people at all the parties will do the same.

Pick a classic piece with a twist. Marry it with a separate that’s trendy but can last a few seasons. Like wearing a sweatshirt paired with a sequined skirt to go with the sports luxe trend.

Party glamour

The sequined jumpers that have taken the comfort-chic trend into the party space is great if styled tastefully. Replace your jeans with fitted leather leggings/ pants or a skirt this season. Instead of the classic LBD this season, one can opt for chic black jumpsuit-trousers. Try monochrome, with top to toe blue — different shades make the look more interesting, with a dash of colour using a statement necklace/clutch.

For the ones who lack time and need a fuss-free look she suggests adding a boyfriend blazer to their day outfit (dress/jeans and a top) with statement earrings and metallic pumps.

To nail a dramatic look!

Wear a pair of pyjamas layered over a glamorous vest and add a luxe shirt to layer. Wearing a glamorous bling short dress is boring and done. Drape a dupatta over a sari with both ends in the front and belt the same. Or wear a draped blouse over palazzo pants. Have fun with dressing up, the results will show.

A headpiece adds instant drama to any look. Since dinner parties normally calls for an understated look, add some spunk with a bold colour. Mixing lace and leather is a not for the faint-hearted but looks very edgy — instead of black — try olive or oxblood.

Looking repetitive

Since we don’t have access to a celebrity closet we have to find innovative ways to look unique. You can always reinvent the accessory you pair with your attire at different occasions. Sometimes wrap a beautiful scarf over a dress for a feminine look or wear a biker leather jacket for a rock chic touch. Working with separates will make you look different each time. Team a crop top with high-waist wide-leg trousers, which can also be used with a high-waist skirt and a boyfriend blazer. Also have a good mix of jumpsuits/ skirts/ dresses in your wardrobe to be used in rotation.

Tip to own the look

A chic cocktail sari is an investment and will make you stand out at a party. In a room full of women dressed in body-cons and short numbers, you will feel great about yourself if you look cool in a glamorous sari.

You could also add an instant pop in an outfit with a few statement rings together or a necklace would which would look ultimate. Midi-rings and hand harnesses also spell ‘statement’ instantly. For people who prefer an understated look stacking delicate bracelets and necklaces would be impactful too.

Little details

Sleek hairstyles like ponytail or topknot give easy-meets-glam vibes for parties. One can easily experiment hairstyles with plenty of videos on YouTube. When it comes to make-up the stylists advice to experiment with any one element in make-up alone.

Christmas tree

Both the stylists feel a party look shouldn’t be overdone until it’s a big red carpet occasion or a truly formal affair. Always follow the rule of 3! Never wear more than three colours or three accessories in an outfit. Always pick one bright colour and team it with something earthy or warm toned. Jewel tones look great with every skin tone. Make one element of your look do the talking.
