What? The legendary Yesudas at the launch of a fashion label? Why not, when the designer happens to be his daughter-in-law? When Darshana Vijay Yesudas unveiled her label “DVY” at Studio Saks, Gopalapuram, there was a happy mix of Kollywood glamour and Page 3 appeal. With friends from the film world and staples from the city’s style circuit making a beeline for the clothes, it seemed to be a dream debut for the Dubai-bred Darshana, who has now made Chennai her home.
The DVY label is about translating trends into everyday practical style. Flowing silhouettes cut away from the body, cheery colour stories, form-flattering fabrics and intricate embroidery marked the debut line of ensembles which were created keeping in mind brunch outings and evening dos with friends. The designer, who was flitting about the fashion house, attending to clients with an air of confidence, took a break to discuss her work. Excerpts:
FASHION FORAY From childhood, I was fascinated by fashion. I liked dressing up. And whenever I wore something I designed for myself, it won compliments. That spurred me to take design seriously and create clothes for my friends. It was my husband, playback singer Vijay Yesudas, who suggested I take my creativity beyond the confines of home.
PEOPLE, PULSE When I took to design in a professional way, there was no fear of the unknown! I just began because I knew exactly what people out there wanted. Clothes have to be classy but, at the same time, wearable. So I went for fuss-free, ready-to-wear garments.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Be clean with cuts and workmanship. Classy doesn’t mean unaffordable. I want clients to find something that’s value for money.
DEBUT LINE There are printed cotton ensembles embellished with crystals and pearls. They are ideal for brunches and casual outings. If accessorised well, they can make it to evening outings too.
The printed chiffon and georgette collection is for tea parties and dinners. It’s a light line that combines the sheerness of the fabric with delicate lace work and shimmering crystals.
The couture line, again in chiffon, is heavy on workmanship. Flowing cuts and intricate embroidery make this line special.
FORMAL TRAINING After a degree in Visual Communication (creative advertising and graphics) from the American University in Dubai, I did an associate degree in fashion textiles and pattern drafting from the reputed French University of Fashion ESMOD.
FASHION SCENE Chennai-ites are becoming very fashion conscious. They are willing to experiment, try out different brands and looks. I have seen a huge change in recent times.
FUTURE PLANS Yes, right now, I’ve stuck to ensembles. I will definitely work on a different range for the next season. I love dressing up my three-year old kid. So ensembles for children are also on the cards.
