Expert tips for a perfect eye make-up

Be it a simple kohl-on-the-go or an elaborate party eye make-up, we love giving our eyes their due in the spotlight. Why not? After all it’s the first thing that most people notice.

But they’re not always perfect — the way we want them to be. Stress coupled with a sleepless night can give you dark circles right on the day of an important party. Wondered how to make your eyes seem bigger? Wishing your eyebrows would appear thicker without having to paint them with kohl?

We turn to make-up artist Meghna Butani for help. Mumbai-based Meghna is an independent hair and make-up artist who has worked her magic on celebrities like Malaika Arora Khan, Freida Pinto, Mandira Bedi and Prachi Desai, besides working with brides, and on ads and film projects.

Tiredness

Strained your eyes watching the last season’s episodes of Breaking Bad back-to-back? It helps to keep some eye cooling drops and even tea bags handy in the refrigerator. Applying them in/on your eyes, will make them look fresher.

Dark circles

Unless you want to prove to your boss that you’ve been sacrificing sleep and working really hard on the presentation, dark circles are best kept hidden. Meghna suggests using an under-eye corrector. “These correctors are orange/yellow in colour and need to be applied prior to using the concealer. They prevent the under-eye from looking ashen.”

Small eyes

Cosmetics will do the trick where cosmetic surgery cannot. Meghna says: “Apply eye liner on the upper lashes and white eye pencil inside the lashline where you would normally use black kohl. The white pencil would make the eyes look bigger. Also use a brown pencil on the lower lash line and on the outer rim of your eyes.”

Deep set eyes

Lighter shades and shimmer can help you with this one. “Apply lighter eye shadow on the eyelids along with a thin eyeliner. Add a touch of shimmer on the centre of the eye lids.” And strictly, no kohl pencil, she adds.

Sparse lashes

Before you bat your eyelids, add the final touches with some lush eyelashes to boot. False eyelashes or lengthening mascara will help add volume to your lashes. Fill up the area that is sparse with brown eye pencil.

Sparse eyebrows

Your eye make-up is never complete without touching up your eyebrows. For people with naturally sparse or thin eyebrows, fill in the area with an eyebrow pencil or eyebrow filler, suggests Meghna. An eyebrow pencil is usually the same colour as the brows, that is, black or brown. And add a coat of transparent mascara.

Five make-up must-haves according to Meghna:

Aqua eye pencil which won’t smudge

Skin primer

Under eye corrector for dark circles

Lip and cheek tint

Lip balm
