It’s time to ditch those plain blacks and sizzling reds and opt for a more colourful wardrobe instead. No, we don’t mean the loud colours that can have a jarring effect on the eye. Spring/Summer collections across the world are focusing on soft pastels and corals that lend a touch of elegance as well as a splash of colour to any style. In fact, the minute you enter any departmental store, you are bound to be met with a range of clothes in exactly these soft neon shades.
“It is a mix and match of both sober shades as well as bright colours this season,” says designer and stylist Ishita Singh.
“Neons and corals are trending in a big way this time round. Both the colours look great on everybody and you can’t go wrong with them,” she says.Designer Ritu Kankaria adds, “The major colours trending this season are cheerful rainbow colours and their tints, keeping in mind it’s summer. Coral is a part of this colour spectrum.”
Given the dusky Indian skin tone, people might be hesitant to carry off some of these colours. But designers say it is all about picking a colour that suits your personality and wearing it well. “One should always pick colours according to their personality, mood and occasion. For daywear, bright coloured skinny jeans or palazzos with a neutral colour top and a statement accessory would be good. For the evenings, one can colour block from the rainbow palette or combine bright colours with metallic or sequins sheen,” says Ritu.
Since cropped pants and palazzos are the rage this season, it would be a great idea to use them in one of these colours. Team it with a soothing white, subtle beige or grey top and there is no way you can go wrong with the look. These colours will neutralise the brightness of the shades you choose and look pleasant as well.
For those who are fashion forward, colour blocking can be a great option. But for those of you who are not confident enough to pull off these colours, there’s still a way to incorporate them into your wardrobe.
“Instead of creating an entire silhouette out of these colours, one can use them in trims and pipings for that pop of colours. Or you could use accessories, bags or shoes in these trending colours. These are easier to carry off. What you could do is wear a simple white top or kurta or some other summery colour and team it up with a brightly coloured neck piece or bangles. It will look great,” says Ishita.
Colours that work well
For fashion lovers: Green with violet, coral with red, electric blue with maroon, yellow with pink.
For the demure ones: Light grey with neon pink, white with yellow, peach with orange, black with coral.
For all: The black and white combination is huge this season with graphic prints.
Combinations to steer clear of
Avoid dark brown with orange, burgundy with neon green and any combination that might make you look dull and boring.
