How can I find out what my skin type is — dry, normal or oily? — Vaishnavi

The feel and look of your skin are good indicators of your skin type. When you wake up in the morning, wipe your face with a tissue, before washing or cleansing it. If the tissue is clean, you have normal to dry skin. If the tissue becomes stained or greasy, you have normal to oily skin. Use different tissues for different areas, wiping the forehead, nose and chin with one tissue and using another one to wipe the cheeks. This will help determine whether you have combination skin.

When I step out, my complexion glows. But after a few hours, it becomes lustreless. — Ayushi

You may be having oily skin. After washing your face, apply an astringent lotion. Then apply compact powder. You can also carry wet tissues and compact powder with you. During the day, wipe your face with a wet tissue to refresh it and apply powder again. Twice a week, use a facial scrub. It helps brighten the skin.

My face is tanned. — Niveditha

Use a facial scrub twice a week. You can either buy one, or mix rice powder with curd and use it. Apply it on the face, rubbing it gently on the skin using small circular movements. Leave it on for five minutes before washing it off. Mix one teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice and apply it daily on your face, at any time. Wash it off after 20 minutes. Or, take two teaspoons of curd, add a pinch of haldi to it, and apply it daily, the same way. Wash it off after 20 minutes with plenty of water. Twice a week, apply a face mask. Mix three teaspoons of oats with one teaspoon each of honey, curd and lemon juice, or egg white. Apply it on the entire face, avoiding the lips and the area around your eyes. Wash it off after half an hour.

My lips are dark. Can I apply honey and lemon juice? — Radha

Yes, you can apply honey and lemon juice on your lips. The skin of the lips is very thin and delicate. However, after washing your face, when your lips are wet, you can rub them gently with a soft towel. This helps remove dead skin. Then apply cream of milk and leave it on for an hour. Add a few drops of lemon juice to the cream before application. Apply pure almond oil daily on the lips at night and leave it on overnight. You can also look for a lip balm with sunscreen. Change your brand of lipstick, because the perfume in some lipsticks can cause darkness as a reaction to sun exposure (photosensitivity).

My hands are darker than my face and are also wrinkled. — Sirisha

Massage your skin before a bath with sesame seed (til) oil daily. Use a mild glycerine soap. Mix two tablespoons of sunflower oil, two tablespoons of lemon juice and three tablespoons of coarse sugar into a paste. Apply it on your hands and rub it in. Wash it off after 15 minutes. You can do this two or three times a week. To soften the skin and lighten the skin colour of your hands, you can also take some sugar in your palm and add lemon juice to it. Rub this on the outside of your hands and then wash it off.

Suggest remedies to get rid off the dark patches on my inner thighs. — Arthi
