Hair dressing is a creative and challenging profession, and today, one of the most exciting and fast growing industries in India, thanks to increasing focus on style and appearance. Small wonder hairdressing is becoming a popular career choice. Here are a few tips to stand out from the crowd.

Be informed

Taking up a hairdressing course to learn the technicalities is not enough. It’s crucial that you learn new skills to stay in the current job and also bag future opportunities. There’s something new coming up every day, so keep abreast of what’s happening.

Invest in yourself

Enrol in refresher courses regularly. There are plenty of big names and companies offering opportunities to stay in tune with what is in vogue. Look around

Subscribe to good international hairdressing magazines, and surf the Internet for information and expert tips. Also, attend seminars and demonstrations on latest products and trends, and gain insights into everything from a stylist’s job to salon management.

Be dedicated

Train younger stylists on a wide range of aspects, and share your knowledge with them. Offer suitable suggestions to the employer to improve the salon, as this may help employers consider you for alternative roles in the future.

Project yourself well

Take opportunities to display your talent. For instance, competitions to judge yourself. Also, when invited, go for charity events or hairdressing shows. They provide an opportunity to meet peers.

Think differently

It’s worth thinking out of the box. Computer skills, for example, are part of a stylist’s job. If you’re looking for something more than a hairdresser’s job, say, like that of a manager’s, you must be well-versed with the computer, proficient in English and excellent in customer handling.
