The trophies have been won, and A-listers have graced the red carpet in their super fashionable ensembles. The 87th Academy Awards was an intoxicating potion of daring statements and delicate tones, structured silhouettes and flowing numbers, bright colours and subtle shades, plunging necklines and soaring slits, sparkly jewellery and minimal accessories. Here’s a roundup of our favourite trends from the Oscars 2015.

Red hot

If we had to pick one actress who wore red the way it’s meant to be worn on the red carpet, it would have to be Dakota Johnson, who looked every bit the diva in a Saint Laurent number with a sparkling embellishment on its single shoulder strap. Gone Girl star, Rosamund Pike too stole fashionistas’ hearts with her well fitted, floral inspired lace Givenchy gown.

Pastel passion

“I think Anna Kendrick’s peach Thakoon dress was lovely although I wish she had worn different makeup,” says model, Sandra Britto, adding: “The delicate diamante collar was another excellent element of detailing. Especially with the summers ahead of us and a number of weddings to attend, coral, salmon pink, and peach dresses will be the order of the day.”

Keira Knightly in a floral Valentino ensemble, complete with a delicate flower crown, was flawless as usual. The flowy dress featured pretty posies and script. “Floral headbands are going to be a huge trend this summer. Flowery crowns are super girly and go best with relaxed, casual clothing, in lighter shades,” Sandra feels.

Beads and sparkle

Lupita Nyong'o, wore a custom pearl-encrusted sleeveless Calvin Klein gown that looked fabulous. Birdman star, Emma Stone, looked radiant in a glittering lime-green Elie Saab dress. Jennifer Anniston’s shimmering sheer Versace dress and Jennifer Lopez’s sparkly ball gown, made a fashionable statement on the red carpet.

“In the coming months, sparkle will be seen as much on clothes as on accessories. Sequins and studs are being flaunted together. Metallic texture clothing is trending but don’t overdo it like Laura Dern who wore a super heavy gown or like Nicole Kidman who teamed her shiny outfit with a bright red belt,” says Lanet Jacobs, a fashion blogger.

White wonder

Elaborate and intricate white gowns were showstoppers. Faith Hill’s full-sleeved beaded ivory J Mendel gown and Marion Cotillard’s off-white silk piece by Christian Dior that featured the polka dot effect and a low back bustle, were among the best white dresses this year. “White is classy, feminine, and can be explored in so many ways. From floral detailing and stone encrusted work to cut-out dresses for summer and crisp white shirt dresses, white is the way forward,” Niyati Manoj, a fashion designer, points out.

Black beauty

Black is an eternal favourite everywhere. At the Awards this year, if Aussie actress Margot Robbie’s sheer black gown grabbed eyeballs, Melanie Griffith garnered as much attention in a fitted and flattering black number. Sienna Miller’s Oscar de la Renta gown with a little cutwork detailing and Cate Blanchett’s simplistic black ensemble, also seemed to impress the fashion police.

“You can never really go wrong with black but it’s time to experiment with various fabrics, cuts, and silhouettes. The best thing about wearing black is that it requires minimal accessorising,” says Frieda Lasrado, a student of fashion designing.

Monochrome mania

The red carpet had its fair share of blacks and of whites. Meryl Streep, wowed the world in a belted monochrome Lanvin couture creation by Alber Elbaz. Reese Witherspoon was quite the vision in her black and white Tom Ford gown, although her shoulders looked a little bare.

Mellow in yellow

Jennifer Hudson’s column dress was quite a hit. Niyati says: “If you’re comfortable wearing this colour in its brighter hues, go in for Pops of canary and school bus yellow, this summer. And for those who like to keep it subtle, lemon, maize, and jasmine yellow are safe bets.”
