A people whose identity and past is enigmatic, the Siddis of Karnataka, have always captured the imagination of many. Capturing them on camera is what Bangalore-based freelance news photographer K. Venkatesh has done. His exhibition of photographs titled “Siddis: A Lost Tribe” opens today.
With roots in Africa (quite obvious from their appearance), this tribe of about 10,000 people are scattered in settlements in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shimoga and Chikamagalur districts. With a way of life that's steeped in their ancient culture, the Siddis are trapped between isolation and assimilation into the mainstream.
The exhibition is on at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Kumara Krupa Road, from August 22 to 25, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
