The iconic Stan Smith shoe, containing edgy twists by Indian designers, was unveiled recently
On a chilly afternoon in DLF Promenade mall, fans of Stan Smith gathered to celebrate the launch of a new shoe collection. Adidas Originals unveiled its iconic Stan Smith brand, containing edgy twists by various artists. “The Stan Smith shoe is named after the legendary tennis player from America who became a sensation in 1970 after winning the Davis Cup and Wimbledon in 1972,” said Deepika Deepti, Adidas Originals head in India. He also made a mark with his white leather shoes, seen for the first time on a tennis court, she added.
Over 40 years later, Stan Smith continues to be a fashion icon. The new Stan Smith will be available in three different colours — green, red and blue — and feature the designs of Himanshu Dogra, Namrata Joshipura and Ratnesh Rastogi. While Himanshu Dogra’s quirky shoe comes with an Indian touch, Namrata’s creation is a colourful sequence of play and flowers. Ratnesh Rastogi from January Rose has crafted two classy versions — a multi-coloured Tetris-inspired shoe and a skate-board look Stan.
Displaying his second shoe, Rastogi said, “As children we used to skip but now all the shoes are made of anti-skid material, which will not let you slip, not let you fall. I wanted a shoe which lets me slip, which lets us go with the flow. I was snowboarding this year so actually the inspiration of the shoe came from the snowboarding”
Apart from the new and latest avatars of the shoe, the event had something extra for the fans of Stan Smith. They got the opportunity to own a piece of instant caricatured picture, at the “Stan yourself” photo booth, similar to the one on the iconic tongue of the Stan Smith shoes. Fans also enjoyed a taste of tennis action against some legends through a motion sensing game.
