Ameen Sayani will present rare nuggets about R.D.Burman in a musical tribute tomorrow
R.D.Burman and retro Hindi music fans are in for a treat this Sunday. Rotary International District 3190 is organizing a musical tribute to the legendary music composer to raise funds for paediatric heart surgeries.
The evening will feature Ameen Sayani of the Geetmala fame, as he presents rare nuggets about the composer. “R. D. Burman was one of the finest music directors,” says Ameen over phone. “He had the distinction of being a great master of traditional as well as current music. Even his first film, Chote Nawab had incredible fusion with songs like ‘Ghar Aaja Ghir Aaye’ which was totally traditional and ‘Matwali Ankhon Wale’ which was Western.”
The nuggets the 83 year old radio host will be presenting, he says, are in audio-visual format and feature sound bytes by the composer’s contemporaries, Lata Mangeshkar, Anand Bakshi, Gulzar, Asha Bhosle and Gulshan Bawra.
“We will also be showing two video clips of R.D. which have been taken from his last interview. He passed away a month after the interview. And these clips will be interspersed by some of his best songs. I have been a great fan and a friend of Burman’s, I have known him since he was a schoolboy.”
The evening’s concert will be led by Kishore Sodha, who has worked with Burman, with Srinivas Achar and troupe. The concert is at Jnana Jyothi Auditorium, Central College Campus, Palace Road on August 18 at 5.30 p.m.
Tickets, priced at Rs 500 and Rs 1000 are available at www.indianstage.in. For home delivery of tickets, contact 9243777970.
