Her works in the past comprised rural expressions and the girl child. In a departure from her previous collections, artist Deepa Nath explores the world of erotica in her latest collection titled ‘Rasa – passion’. On display at Ginger Lily, the newly opened gallery at Radisson Blu hotel, the art works are a collection of charcoals on paper and canvas with some acrylic and a couple of Plaster of Paris sculptures mounted on canvas.
As the title suggests, the works depict the beauty of man-woman relationships, taking a cue from the Kamasutra. Deepa goes a step further by having the Kamasutra script in Devanagri calligraphed upon some of the artworks. Needless to say there is a certain newness to this kind of work.
While almost all the paintings depict the passion between a couple, Deepa lends a sensitive touch to her work thus preventing it from seeming voyeuristic. The artist, who is known to have an innate ability to depict human emotions, has effectively captured the tender expressions between the couple.
Quite a break from Deepa’s usual line of work, Rasa showcases the coming of age of an artist. Deepa claims that she has evolved as an artist and a woman and adds, “Rasa has me stepping out of my comfort zone.” Her clever use of strokes lends a softness to her works which are mostly sepia toned but with careful splotches of colour that serve to accentuate the starkness of charcoal on canvas subtly.
The artworks are on display till November 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ginger Lily.
