It’s time to bid farewell to yet another year, and if you’re getting ready to ring in 2015 at the party of the year, here’s what you need to know before you go last-minute shopping.

Keep it classic

When it comes to the biggest event of the year, you may prefer to play it safe and sometimes, that might be your best bet. If you have a classic little black dress (LBD) that you can pull off with confidence, then nothing like it. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. “The Little Black Dress is a style statement in itself and can create that perfect look if accessorised well with some chunky jewellery or elegant, delicate pieces,” says designer Nikhil Thampi, and adds, “Be comfortable in whatever you wear and don't go over the top with your dressing and bling. The LBD is perfect to ensure that you have a fun New Year’s Eve without compromising on style.

  Artfully accessorise

Chances are that in the hunt for the perfect party outfit, you’ll forget about the equally essential counterpart to a perfect look — accessories. The right ones can make or break an outfit, so choose wisely; but don’t skimp on a bauble or two. “New Year’s Eve Party is the best reason in itself to be creative and dress up stylishly,” believes designer Nikhil Thampi.

“For accessories, go glam-chic with metallic shoes or a holographic clutch. A single piece of statement jewellery is all you'll need to stand out in the crowd,” Anita Dongre insists, recommending sweetheart necklines or strapless outfits to ensure that the focus remains on the one piece of statement jewellery.

Pernia Qureshi, of the popular online designer store Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop, also insists that statement jewellery is the secret to looking party perfect this year. “Make a grand entrance with a minimal outfit and let your cocktail jewels do all the talking.”

  Faux fur to the rescue

If you’re spending New Year’s Eve in a place where temperatures are dropping, chances are you’ll ring in the year with your party outfit hidden inside your regular coat — what a waste! So figure out your plans and invest in the one piece that will have you looking glam while keeping you warm — a faux fur coat. Designer Pia Pauro believes you can’t go wrong in a lovely long dress, gorgeous earrings and high heels, topped with a faux fur coat. Design duo Gauri and Nainika recommend this year’s runway favourite as well, saying it is best to stay warm yet glamorous.

  Flaunt it

If you’re one of those people who stuck to 2013’s resolution to eat healthy and get fit — then there’s no better time to show it off (and rub it in the faces of those who didn’t) than at the New Year’s Eve party! Flaunt those toned abs in a crop top — we’ve seen them on and off the runway in a range of different looks all year long. Design team Shivan and Narresh, famous for their bikini saree, believe that crop tops are the way to go if you want to make a statement.

But it doesn’t stop there. If you’re set to show some skin, then asymmetric hemlines and thigh-high slits are all extremely sexy options! Or, if you want to tone it down a bit, play peek-a-boo. Lace inlays and sheer panels are both trends that rocked the red carpet in 2014, so don’t be afraid to flaunt that bod!

  Ahead of the curve

If you really want to stay ahead of the trend though, the key is to incorporate the colour of the year 2015 — marsala — into your outfit. Named after the Italian sweet wine, the reddish-brown hue is easy to incorporate into any scheme and is sure to complement Indian skin tones. Listen to designer Anupama Dayal’s advice if you’re feeling her boho-chic vibe: “Wear the color Marsala and a flower in your hair.”
