Short is in. So is long. Confused? Don’t be. That’s style guru Jawed Habib’s mantra this summer. “Cut your hair short or leave it long, but never in an in-between length,” he says.

Short cuts are cool and leave you feeling comfortable even when the sun blazes down. Long hair, he says, can easily be tied up — into a casual top knot or an elegant chignon.

You exude a bindaas or sophisticated look depending on how you decide to put up your hair.

The lure of layers

Else, cut your hair in layers. This, says Jawed, works well for both men and women in South India, where the summer leaves you all sweaty.

“Sweat leaves the hair looking flat and listless. Layers liven it up,” he says.

If you’re going in for longer hair, opt for fringes. So, even if you tie up your hair, the fringes add a dash of style.

Rosemary Liufan of Pinky Beauty Salon, R.S. Puram, suggests rolling your hair into a bun or cutting it short. Blunt cuts that fall above the neck or blunt cuts with steps are in this summer, she says.

“Coimbatore’s weather has turned humid; so keeping hair short is ideal,” she says. Many youngsters prefer a blunt cut with long slants in the front. She also advises against colouring one’s hair in summer.

For those with long, silky hair, Rosemary’s tip is to simply twist the tresses, roll, and pin them up. Those with short hair can opt for a centre partition and poof the hair on either side. It’s a great look for a party. For a simple style, throw in a decorative hair band.

The pixie cut is in vogue among women, says Shanmuga Kumar (Shaan), franchisee, Page 3 Salon, Race Course.

“We decide the cut based on the shape of our clients’ faces. The pixie cut works beautifully for those with lean faces. It might make someone with a round face look plump. So, we add a fringe to smoothen out the look,” he says.

Shaan says most of his clients like to sport medium-length hair. “They make it look interesting with the addition of layers.”

Celebrity hair stylist Saddique Alam, brand trainer, Green Trends Unisex Hair and Style Salon, says young girls like the natural look. “Medium-length hair cut in layers allows you to carry off a messy hair-do in style. You can shampoo your hair and then just scrunch it up. Else, if you want it to fall well, comb and style it after it dries.”

Curls can jazz up any summer day. “Curls have made a comeback, especially since it is the wedding season,” says Shaan. So, what’s going to be your summer style?

Hue matters

- Those with darker complexion must avoid coppers and reds. They make the face look terribly dull. Opt for browns and khakhigolds; they add value to your hair, but don’t draw attention away from your face.

- Temporary colours are in; they last just a wash. This way, you can experiment, without damaging your hair much.

Hair care

- Oil hair twice a week, wash and apply conditioner.

- Avoid hair dryers; they dry out your hair.

- Pamper your hair with a hair spa once in 10 days. You'll look and feel good.

Men and mane

- The side partition is in, for it helps to create volume on the side.

- The Mohawk style is also trending
