The Vodafone Coimbatore Marathon (VCM), an annual event put together by Coimbatore Cancer Foundation (CCF) and Coimbatore Runners to promote the cause of CCF last year, met with overwhelming response with about 8300 people participating in its inaugural edition in October 2013. Not just running, VCM has also engaged in outreach programmes that have played a pivotal role in the marathon’s success.
The outreach team anchored by Coimbatore Runners, has more than 20 runner volunteers. It comprises doctors, industrialists, business people and homemakers. Through them, the programme has provided information and guidance about running as a route to fitness and built awareness about the activities of CCF.
Last year, the outreach team dedicated over 200 hours in conducting programs in various companies, colleges, schools, community organisations, professional & industry associations in and around Coimbatore. It also reached out to the public at large in various parks, at Racecourse, the stadium and surrounding sporting grounds, etc. Through these programs, the team interacted directly with more than 25,000 people.

Forging teams For Corporates in the city such as ABT, ELGI Equipments, L&T, LMW, Mahendra Pumps, Roots and VWR who supported the event, this was a team-building opportunity and they encouraged their employees to participate in large numbers. The programme not only increased awareness about the event, it also inspired the audience to spread the word among their friends and family.
