That there is more to Chennai than the idli and vada becomes apparent once you hit the narrow streets of George Town, strolling to the aroma of freshly-fried kachoris and jalebis even as your eyes feast on the colours of garments and trinkets.
As part of Madras Week celebrations, we bring to you a four-part series on food walks with Sridhar Venkataraman, the organiser of the event. This week we sample the flavours of Sowcarpet. “Sowcarpet has one of the oldest street food markets in the city, around 60 years old. It’s a supplementary to the wholesale markets that were established here. These eateries are run over generations by people from Rajasthan and Gujarat,” says Sridhar who has been part of this food trail for the last two years.
For intrepid food lovers, a piece of advice: follow your nose. Here’s the trail to follow.
(This was first of the four food walks curated by Sridhar Venkataram for Madras Week.)
