“Our show is coming at a time when the television is ruled by supernatural elements and makkhi-machchar. It is a risk because it is based on ‘natural’ elements,” says Nakuul Mehta, who is now all set to showcase his talent in Ishqbaaz .

Though the name suggests the serial is of romantic genre, the actor insists it is a family drama.

Having made a name for himself on television through Pyaar ka dard hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara and taking up diverse responsibilities as an actor and show host, Nakuul wants to start with a fresh slate and work on his strengths. He is portraying the character of Shivaay Singh Oberoi in the show which will be aired on Star Plus channel from June 27.

Excerpts:

Tell us aboutIshqbaaz

After a long time you will see family drama shows like Swabhiman and Shanti. It has got elements of conflict between parents and kids and the issue of generation gap. The story is about three brothers and their relationship with each other. It is basically based on the two epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The show is based on business family drama, then why the title isIshqbaaz?

The basic difference between this serial and the rest of the serials is that her the protagonists are boys and not saas-bahu. It’s more about interpersonal relationships. Eventually, there will be romance and it will be a very strong love story. It will be about how life changes when a woman comes into your life.

Tell us about your role in this serial. Are you an Ishqbaaz too or you have a counter role to the title?

I am not playing the conventional guy at all unlike my last show. My previous role was of a guy who is very lovable and romantic but Shivaay does not believe in romance and the whole concept of getting married. Due to certain circumstances he’s grown up to love money, fame and family name more. For this guy lineage and family name is everything; he judges people based on their name. He is a very arrogant person and looks down on people who are not of his status yet he loves his brothers a lot. It’s basically about how he does not believe in love at all and how life comes around.

You were last seen in the showPyaar ka Dard hai.. Which was two years back, so what has kept you busy all this while?

Last year I was hosting India’s Got Talent season 6 . Practically I was not off television; it’s just that I was doing a fictional show so you don’t see me every day. I was also doing a web series called I don’t watch T.V.! It’s a show that I have produced, created and also acted in. That took up a lot of my time because production is a full time job.

You have been trained in different dance forms . So, why did you not work as a choreographer?

To be honest I started dancing because I knew I wanted to be an actor. Being a dancer always helps you with body language and grace. Learning to dance was never my priority. I also learnt horse riding and singing. I did anything possible to give me an edge as an actor because these things help you in a wholesome way as an artist.
