Games available for mobile phones today are much more than just Candy Crush. For those of you who remember starting out with Snake and then moving on to Bounce, life’s pretty good, thanks to the virtual smorgasbord of games available. Here are some of the graphic-heavy ones, those that are totally worth the amount of time (and the money) spent on them.
Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThis game was first released in 2004, just over 10 years ago. It is set in 1992, in the fictional state of San Andreas that comprises three major cities – Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas – and revolves around the life of Carl Johnson, who is forced to return to his former life of crime. The graphics have been re-mastered specifically for smart phones, and the touch-screen controls, while a little exasperating to get used to at first, are not that bad. Of course, playing with a controller is recommended, but the touch-screen will definitely do in a pinch. The developers recommend re-booting your device after downloading the app and closing other applications while playing (always a good tip, even for other apps).
Minecraft: Pocket EditionDon’t scoff, now. Minecraft isn’t just for kids. In case you need more proof, check out this beautiful trailer of Westeros (from Game of Thrones ) made via Minecraft – https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=EWgvu8QBph8. In case you’ve been living under a rock all your life, Minecraft is a game that lets you place blocks to build stuff, solve puzzles and go on adventures. While the desktop version indeed rules, the app is pretty good too. It includes Survival and Creative modes, and allows for multiple players on a local Wi-Fi network. It even retains its old-school ‘blockiness’ for that perfect dose of nostalgia.
The Walking Dead: Season OneThe Walking Dead fans, unite and terrify! The game is a five-part series plus a special episode, where the first episode is free and the rest are paid for (worth every penny, I might add). The game is kind of like an interactive animated graphic novel, where your actions change the course of the story. The premise is that you play as Lee Everett, a convicted criminal who has to protect orphaned Clementine, while the undead try to take control. And it’s simple – just point-and-click actions take you forward.
The Room and The Room 2While both games are available for Android and iOS, they are best played either on a big Android screen or on an iPad. The premise is that you’re in a room with a well-locked safe, and you need to open it by following a trail of cryptic clues left by a mysterious scientist known only by his initials, A.S. Intriguing enough, but what makes the game amazing is its graphics. Detailed, realistic and sophisticated, they are enhanced by the soundtrack (cue: the really creepy whispers that start in Chapter three). You have to be alert to find buttons, switches, dials, keys and other sorts of catches to try and open the box. And you will really need the in-game clues provided from time to time.
