Nisha Mathew's love for steel is understandable. She is an architect after all and architects appreciate the qualities of this significant construction material. Nisha is now extending her fascination for steel to designing products. The principal architect at the Koramangala-based Mathew and Bose architects is now launching a collection of handcrafted stainless steel objects. On June 10, the collection will be launched at Cinnamon with designer Anavila Mishra’s spring summer line of linen saris.
Around 25 products - minimalistic looking vases, platters, bowls and even an installation piece executed mostly using mesh form - from her studio ANAH will be on display. “It is mostly utilitarian. My work as an architect informs my design. In architecture you are looking for a solution but not without the aesthetic that is inherent in you. It works the same way for here,” says Nisha.
It is not a foray for her as Nisha has been quietly involved with designing with intermittent shows, private commissions here and there. But this outing will mark the onset of ANAH's long haul in the field.
The architecture firm in Koramangala will also have their studio where customers can see designing in progress, view the objects and get them custom designed. Speaking about her love for steel, she says the material is rugged, reusable and low on maintenance. “We use wire which is very pliable. It is food grade and of good quality. We do stuff in structured design and but also woven products in orderly fashion,” says the designer, who has significant clients abroad. Though ANAH creates a range of products, it will focus on customized lights.
(The collection will be on display from June 10 to 17 at Cinnamon, 24, Gangadhar Chetty Road, Opposite RBNAMS Grounds.)
