To the outsider trees are Kochi’s signature. To the insider a part of daily life. And one is not pointing to the umbrella of rain trees in Fort Kochi. Take a look around and most of our promenades like Panampilly Nagar Road, Park Avenue, NH Bypass, Palluruthy-Kochi, Foreshore Road, roads in Tripunithura and such have a lush green cover offering walkers and commuters shade and shelter. But it is a different story on the city’s 4-km-long MG Road where trees have been drastically pollarded and felled to let the Metro Rail in. In fact that is the case in many parts of the city. It’s a choice that a growing city needs to make, a choice between development and environment. It can certainly go hand in hand. Photos: H.Vibhu
