Last summer, when Robin Gubbi and his family decided that they wanted a dog to complete their family, they visited the Chennai Adoption Drive (CAD). Within a few minutes, Robin’s six-year-old daughter Cyntia had a new friend. “The puppy started running after her and playing with her,” says the father about the young mongrel (now named Casper). Robin’s older daughter Shreya declares that the bright-eyed pooch who recently celebrated his first birthday is her best friend. Robin reveals that his decision to adopt was motivated by the idea of giving a homeless pup a better life, and that today, Casper and his daughters are inseparable.
Manav Mukund has a similar story to tell. “I didn’t want to go and choose what is considered the ‘cutest’ pup,” he says, and adds that all he did was go to the adoption drive and sit down next to a group of puppies that had just been brought in for the event. “I just sat there and put my hand out. This little fellow came to me and gave me a lick”. Karna is now a fiercely protective member of Manav’s household. Karna has since inspired many of Manav’s friends to adopt homeless pets.
For CAD founder Jennifer Jacob, Karna’s story is an example of a chain reaction of the best kind. “Over the past two years, we’ve found nearly 600 adopters in our city,” she says. “It makes me so happy, just knowing they now have wonderful homes.”
Chennai Adoption Drive’s next event for puppies and kittens is scheduled for Sunday, April 21, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 78/1, McNichols Road, Chetpet. The adoptions are free of cost and address/ID proof is mandatory. Call 8939311148 for details.
