It was a very different birthday for actor Aadhi on Sunday (December 14). Every year, the actor celebrates it differently, and in a new ambience. This time around, the beach-loving actor decided to help clean up a stretch of Besant Nagar beach with his friends and long-time fans from Salem, Hosur, Dharmapuri and Coimbatore. About 90 people, including the team from his film, Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka team, also pledged to donate their eyes to Sankara Nethralaya.

“We got together at 6.30 a.m. and started working at 7 a.m.. Luckily, some Corporation employees were around and we roped them in to guide us. We were told to clean closer to the shore, because that’s where muck tends to accumulate,” he said. Aadhi’s team managed to fill about 10 bags with garbage — plastic spoons, covers, thermocol cups, tea cups, burst balloons…

“It is heartbreaking to see that we have dirtied our beach this way,” says Aadhi, who was glad to see a group of boys, who had initially made fun of the cleaning drive, dumping their covers in a bin. “Finally, that’s all we need. That we take responsibility for our actions,” he said. He also hoped that his fans would try and emulate the drive in their respective areas and cities.

“I was very happy they came for a cause, travelling all the way.”

At about 10.30 a.m., once the stretch of the beach was clean, Aadhi headed home and packed for his holiday — to a small island near Sriharikota. “We fished, we grilled what we caught… the waves, the beach, the sky… it was magical. It was one long party,” he smiled.
